Tilt & Turn Windows: Benefits and Features

Tilt and turn windows are European windows most commonly used in Germany but they are slowly making a breakthrough here at home. They are characterized by sophisticated design features, weatherproofing technology and, most importantly, frames made from a very resilient compound called unplasticized polyvinyl chloride (U-PVC).

More on U-PVC

U-PVC is becoming the most widespread window frame material on the market because of its extremely efficient energy saving properties. U-PVC, or vinyl in short, is resistant to acid rain and other deforming atmospheric chemicals present in the surrounding environment. Another advantage with vinyl is that it can be made and tailored to look like aluminum, wood, steel and other window frame materials.

The features and benefits of tilt & turn windows

  • Impact resistance.
Tilt & turn window frames made from U-PVC can take a beating.
  • Insulation and affordability.
Energy costs can be reduced by 35% because of the high thermal insulation properties of U-PVC. In addition, double weatherstripping seals along the frames keep no gaps exposed to drafts.
  • Low-maintenance.
At any point that a mechanism or part is not working up to speed, the sash can be replaced without removing the entire frame. The weatherproof properties of U-PVC make painting or coating unnecessary for tilt & turn windows and will only require occasional cleaning with a soapy cloth.
  • Heavy-duty build.
The U-PVC frames are resistant towards corrosion and warping, and can withstand any area's climate.
  • Ergonomic handle.
The handle that operates the sash is easy to use and doesn't require a lot of force to turn.
  • Any choice of colour.
All solid and custom colors can be applied to the U-PVC window frame. Many homeowners prefer the look of wooden frames and apply colours that emulate the effect of chopped timber.
  • Glass finishes and designs.
Exercise your improvisation and uniqueness with the many glass finishes available.
  • Environmentally friendly.
The U-PVC window frame can be recycled. Furthermore, unlike timber frames, U-PVC production does not rely on the elimination of trees.

How to operate a tilt & turn window

Let's give a brief walkthrough on how tilt & turn windows work in three simple steps:

Step 1: Opening the sash door from the side.

The handle is pointing south, turning it is completely horizontal will cause the mechanism to open from the side like a casement window.

Step 2: Opening the sash door from the top.

Shut the sash tight and turn the handle north in the same clockwise or anticlockwise motion (depending on left/right-handed orientation) and pull it towards you like a hopper window.

Step 3: Close the sash and turn the handle until it is pointing south again for a complete shut.
